CHANEL DUPlessis

From the start of her life, Chanel was born a survivor. Born in South Africa to a mother whose military involvement caused several disc placements, Chanel struggled to find her place in the world. Unsure if it was the absence of her father due to losing him as a small child or the instability her mother’s job caused. 

Through it all, there was one thing Chanel knew she could depend on; herself. Childhood experiences both good and bad had shaped her into a resourceful and outgoing person. 

In search of answers within, Chanel found herself in the middle of one of her biggest battles. Plagues of abandonment, loneliness, and identity issues influenced vulnerabilities within Chanel that she did not know how to fight. These vulnerabilities led to continued exposure to traumatic experiences such as drug addiction, exploitation, and incarceration. But even that was not enough to dim the light inside of Chanel. 

Chanel exited the life after her fifth attempt in 2015.  Just four years later, Chanel began her journey as an advocate.  Chanel has chosen to use her  voice and experiences to raise awareness, support survivors, and advocate for policy changes to combat human trafficking. She plays a crucial role in shaping anti-trafficking efforts, providing valuable insights, and driving survivor-centered approaches. Chanel is certified CSEC trainer and conducts CSEC 101 trainings. Chanel often works with organizations, government agencies, and non-profit groups to provide support and resources for survivors, raise public awareness, advocate for legislative changes, and contribute to training and capacity building initiatives. 

Additionally, Chanel is an addict in recovery and celebrates her five years this June.  Above and beyond her own journey and story, Chanel is the mother to an amazing daughter in high school.
